John Winston Ono Lennon MBE (born John Winston Lennon, October 9, 1940-December 8, 1980) was an English musician, songwriter and peace activist who achieved widespread fame as the Beatles ' member, co-leading vocalist and rhythm guitarist. His collaboration with Paul McCartney in the composition of songs remains the most effective in history. In 1969 he and his second wife, Yoko Ono, began the Plastic Ono Band.Raised in Liverpool, as a teenager, Lennon engaged in skiffle craze. He formed his first band in 1956, The Quarrymen, which in 1960 grew into the Beatles. At first he was the de facto leader of the party, a position that was eventually ceded to McCartney. Lennon was distinguished in his songs, painting, drawing, on film and in interviews by his defiant nature and acerbic humor.
