The 17-year-old Ackland made his professional stage debut in "The Hasty Head" in 1945, after attending London's Central School of Speech and Drama. While he first appeared in an uncredited bit role on screen in the Oscar-winning thriller of John Boulting and Roy Boulting, Seven Days to Noon (1950), he made his credited debut in a supporting role in the Ghost Ship of Vernon Sewell (1952).
