Julia O'Hara Stiles was born in New York City on 28 March 1981, the outgoing daughter of a Greenwich Village artist mother, Judith Newcomb Stiles, and John O'Hara, father of an elementary school teacher. She is the eldest of three, and has ancestry of Irish, English and German. Encouraged from an early age to take modern dance lessons, she was introduced to Shakespeare and theatre. She made her child actress debut with the groundbreaking off-Broadway La MaMa Theatre at the age of 11
