Kate Josephine Bateman Crowe was an American actress (October 7, 1842-April 8, 1917). She began as a child actor, and later built a career in leading romantic roles. Kate Josephine Bateman was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Her father, Hezekiah Linthicum Bateman, was an actor and theatrical director. Her mother, Sidney Frances Bateman, was a playwright, theatrical director and actor and her maternal grandfather, Joseph Cowell, was a comedic actor. The Bateman family moved to New York in 1859, and the next March seventeen-year-old Kate debuted at New York's Winter Garden in her mother's version of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Evangeline.
