Katherine Kiernan Mulgrew was born on 29 April 1955 or Kate Mulgrew. She grew up in Dubuque, Iowa, the second oldest child of an Irish Catholic family (and oldest girl). When Kate expressed an interest in acting as a child, her mother, Joan, encouraged her to take part in local plays. At the age of 17 Kate left Iowa to take up a career in acting for New York City.The Stella Adler Conservatory (a part of the Acting Program of The University of New York) accepted the actress and spent only a year there, when she landed the lead role in the Ryan's Hope ABC soap opera in 1975.
