The niece of violinist Vera Beths and of oboist Werner Herbers is Katja Herbers. Growing up she spent time with the chamber music ensemble L'Archibudelli in America, joining her mother on tour. Her mother remarried the cellist Anner Bylsma and her father, who introduced her to the stage, remarried costume designer Leonie Polak. She had an au pair of Canadians and learnt to speak French, German and Holland while growing up.Herbers went to Amsterdam's Ignatius Gymnasium. She studied Psychology at Amsterdam University. She attended De Trap's central theater school during her psychology studies. She moved to New York and moved to Studio HB. She was later admitted into Amsterdam's Theaterschool.
