Kevin James was born on 26 April 1965 to Janet (Klein), an office worker, and Joseph Valentine Knipfing, Jr., an insurance business director, in Mineola, Long Island, New York. He was brought up in Stony Brook and attended SUNY Cortland, where he played fullback on the football team and at the sports administration level. After three years he knew this wasn't the road for him. He decided to break up the summer monotony upon moving home, and entered a group theater. He so loved the audience response to a play in which he had a comic part, that he joined the improv party of his brother (comedian Gary Valentine).
