Cleft-, steely- and virile star of international cinema who rose from being "the son of a ragman" (the name of his best- autobiography of 1988) to becoming a bona fide superstar, Kirk Douglas, also known as Issur Danielovitch Demsky, was born in Amsterdam, New York, on December 9, 1916. His ancestors were Jewish refugees from Chavusy, Mahilyow Voblast (now in Belarus), Bryna (Sanglel), and Herschel Danielovitch. Though he grew up in a deprived neighborhood, during his time at St. Lawrence University, Douglas was a good student and a keen athlete, and wrestled competitively.
