The actor and singer Lainie Kazan first made her name on the musical The Happiest Girl in the World with her Broadway debut in 1961. She appeared in another musical the next year, in Bravo Giovanni.He ultimately acted as Barbra Streisand's understudy for Fanny Brice's leading role in Funny Girl (1968), and when Streisand was unable to act for one day of the show's run due to a throat injury, Kazan took her place in both a matinee and evening set.Ever the tireless entertainer, Kazan has contributed her talents to an infinite array of roles in film and television projects; probably her most talked-about role is of the hilarious mother Maria Portokalos in My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), and its sequel, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016).
