Laura Leggett Linney was born into a family of theaters in New York City on 5 February 1964. Her father was Romulus Linney, a prominent playwright whose own great-grandfather was a North Carolina congressman. Miriam Anderson (Leggett) her mother is a nurse. While she did not live in the house of her father (his parents divorced when she was a baby), the world of Linney was partially rotating.She graduated from Brown University in 1986 and studied acting at Moscow's Juilliard and Arts Theater Institute, then embarked on a Broadway stage career earning positive reviews for her roles in plays such as "Hedda Gabler" and "Six Degrees of Separation."
