Leslie Phillips ' heart was very young in theater, a much-loved comedy actor who specialized in portraying plummy roles, mostly in English. In order to lose his natural cockney accent (then a regional British focus would be a major barrier for an aspiring actor) he took Elocution training while he was a child, and attended Italia Conti College. He served with Durham Light Infantry in the Second World War (1942-45) until he suffered a shell shock. It was in the 1950s that he became a remarkable player in British movies. He returned to acting. The "Doctor" movie series was his strongest claim to fame until now.
