Founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Lew Ayres had been born in San Diego, California. A college dropout, he was spotted by a talent agent in Los Angeles' Coconut Grove nightclub and entered as a bit player in Hollywood. He was leading man to Greta Garbo in The Kiss (1929) but his big break was Paul Baumer's role in All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). He was profoundly influenced by the film's anti-war message. His return to the movie industry after the war was undistinguished until Johnny Belinda (1948) .
