Melissa Viviane Jefferson (born April 27, 1988) is an American actress, rapper , songwriter, and flutist, professionally known as Lizzo. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, she moved to Houston , Texas, where she started her recording career, before moving to Minneapolis.Lizzo released two studio albums — Lizzobangers (2013), and Big Grrrl Small World (2015), before signing with Nice Life and Atlantic Records. Coconut Oil, Lizzo's first major-label EP, was released in 2016.
