Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor (born 7 November 1996) is a New Zealand singer and songwriter who is known professionally as Lorde (pronounced "lord"). She is known for employing unusual musical forms and insightful songwriting, drawing influence from the nobility for her stage name. Lorde was born in the Takapuna suburb of Auckland and raised in nearby Devonport. She signed with Universal Music Group in 2009 and partnered to start recording material with producer Joel Little in 2011. In 2013, Universal Music released the pair's first joint effort commercially, an extended play (EP) titled The Love Club.
