Luise Rainer, the first thespian to win back-to-back Oscars, was born into a prosperous Jewish family on 12 January 1910 in Dusseldorf, Germany. Her parents were Emilie (Königsberger) and the businessman Heinrich Rainer. She took the stage, practicing her craft on Germany's boards.She was discovered by legendary theater director Max Reinhardt as a young actress and became a part of his Vienna, Austria, company. "I was supposed to be very talented, and he heard of me. He wanted me to be part of his theater," Rainer said in an interview in 1997.
