Lupita Amondi Nyong'o was born to Kenyan parents Dorothy Ogada Buyu and Peter Anyang ' Nyong'o on 1 March 1983 in Mexico City, Mexico. Her father, a senator, then served as a visiting political science lecturer. She grew up in Kenya. At 16, her parents sent her back to Mexico to study Spanish for seven months.She read film studies at Hampshire College, Massachusetts and graduated from the acting program of the Yale School of Drama, after serving as a production assistant on several films. As brutalized slave Patsey in the acclaimed director Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave (2013) she delighted cinema audiences in her film debut in 2013.
