E.T. A 1982 American science fiction film produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, and written by Melissa Mathison, Extra-Terrestrial. This tells Elliott's story, a child who is friends with an alien, named "E.T." stuck on Earth. The movie stars Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, and Henry Thomas, and casts Carlo Rambaldi and Dennis Muren with special effects. The idea was based on an imaginary friend Spielberg developed in 1960, after the divorce of his parents. Spielberg met Mathison in 1980, and created a new narrative from the unfinished Night Skies attempt. It was shot on a budget of $10.5 million, from September to December 1981. Unlike other films, to encourage credible emotional performances from the young cast it was filmed in a rough chronological sequence.
