Born in Norfolk, Virginia to the rich stockbroker Cornelius Hancock Sullavan and hereditary Garland Council Sullavan, Margaret Brooke overcame a muscle weakness in her youth to become a rebellious teenager in the prestigious private schools.She went on to play with Harvard's University Players and made her debut on Broadway in Hello, Lola in 1926. Her marriage to Henry Fonda on Christmas Day in 1931 only lasted 15 months, and her later marriages to director William Wyler and agent Leland Hayward were tempestuous too. Bridget and Bill, two of her three children, would spend some time in mental institutions, committing suicide.
