Raised on 3 May 1906 in Quincy, Illinois, to Mary Astor, Lucile Vasconcellos Langhanke, a German immigrant father, Otto Ludwig Langhanke, and an Illinois American mother, Helen Marie Vasconcellos, of Portuguese and Irish descent. Her parents were very hopeful about her as they knew the beauty of Mary, and that they could make her successful if they were playing their cards correctly. They knew they wanted something more than they had for their daughter, and they made that possible by getting Mary into different modeling contests. Luck was with Mary and her parents as one contest came to the attention of moguls from Hollywood who signed it at 14. Her first film was a bit of a part of The Scarecrow (1920).
