Established internationally as "Jethro Bodine" in the hit TV show The Beverly Hillbillies (1962), for three years after the Hillbillies went off the air, Baer did not find work as an actor in Hollywood. Finally Baer was forced to work as an actor in his movie Macon County Line (1974), which he wrote and produced with a friend as well. While it did not help him escape his character Jethro, he won more than $35 million in box office receipts and (later) rental receipts. All after a little more than $100,000 initial investment. Not poor for a "Sixth Grade School" boy!
