Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson was born on 3 January 1956 in Peekskill, New York, USA as the sixth of eleven children of Hutton Gibson, a brakeman on the railroad, and Anne Patricia (Reilly) Gibson (who died in December 1990). His mother, from County Longford, was Irish while his father, who was raised in America, is largely of Irish descent. In the late 1960s Mel and his family moved to Australia, settling in New South Wales, where Mel's paternal grandmother, Eva Mylott, a contralto opera singer, was born. After high school, Mel enrolled at Sydney's University of New South Wales, playing alongside future film thespians Judy Davis and Geoffrey Rush at the National Academy of Dramatic Arts.
