Melissa was born in Sayville, New York. Her acting career began at the age of four, when she made a commercial for Splashy, a bath toy. His girlfriend, Paula Hart, was her agent right from the start. Melissa is the oldest of eight daughters, two of them from the second marriage to her mother.As the youngest member of New York's Circle Repertory Lab Company, Melissa appeared in two plays: ' Beside Herself ' in 1989 (starring Lois Smith and William Hurt) and ' Imagining Brad ' in 1990. She was also with Martin Sheen in Broadway's National Actors Theater production "The Crucible" (as an understudy of three of the children in the play).
