Michael Clarke Duncan was born in Chicago, Illinois, on 10 December 1957. Raised on Chicago's South Side by his single mother, Jean, a house cleaner, Duncan grew up avoiding drugs and alcohol, rather than concentrating on education. He tried to play high school football, but his mother wouldn't let him go, afraid he'd get hurt. He then turned to acting and hoped to become a successful actor. He worked on digging ditches at People's Gas Company in Chicago, after graduating from high school and completing community college. He secured minor parts while working as a bodyguard before he left his job and went to Hollywood.
