Michael Landon was born on Saturday 31 October 1936 in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, to Eugene Maurice Orowitz. His father and he moved to Collingswood, New Jersey in 1941. He participated — and did very well — in track and field while Eugene was in high school, particularly javelin throwing, and his athletic ability won him a scholarship to USC. An incident, however, wounded his arm, ending his sporting career — and his term at USC — and he worked a number of odd jobs and minor roles to meet ends and concluded that acting was his choice. He felt, though, that his real name was not an apt one for an aspiring artist, and so "Michael Landon" was born.
