Milton Berle was born to Sarah (Glantz) and Moses Berlinger, a paint and varnish dealer, in New York City on 12 July 1908. He was trained at Professional Children's School in New York and started working at age 5. His first stage appearance in Atlantic City, New Jersey, was at "Florodora." He appeared in 1931 at New York's Palace Theatre, then in nightclubs and theatres. He starred in "Saluta," "See My Lawyer" and "Ziegfeld Follies of 1943" in Broadway musicals. His tv debut in Chicago, 1929, was on experimental scanning-wheel tv.
