Grace Nichols had been born in Robbins, Illinois, on December 28, 1932. At the age of 16 she began her career as a show business singer with Duke Ellington on a ballet she produced and later sang with his band for one of his works. Since transforming into a success she was nominated double for "The Blacks" and "Kicks and Company" for the Sarah Siddons Prize.
