Nona Gaye was unavoidable to become a musician-she is the granddaughter of Cuban jazz great Slim Gaillard, the niece of R&B musician / songwriter Frankie Gaye and the aunt of soul giant Marvin Gaye. Signed to Third / Stone Atlantic at 14, in 1992 Nona released "Heart for the Future" which included the top 20 hit "I'm Overjoyed."But this was acting which gave Nona her own name. She won the role of Khalilah ' Belinda ' Ali in Ali (2001) opposite Academy Award-nominee Will Smith, with no acting experience and her agents urging her not to get her hopes up. Nona continued to play Zee in the adaptations of the "Matrix," replacing singer Aaliyah in a plane crash following her unexpected death.
