Olivia Mary de Havilland was born July 1, 1916 in Tokyo, Japan, to British parents Lilian Augusta (Ruse), a former dancer, and English professor and patent attorney Walter Augustus de Havilland. Her sister Joan was born the next year, later to become known as Joan Fontaine.Her surname comes from her paternal ancestor, whose family in the Channel Islands came from Guernsey. Her parents split when Olivia was just three, and she moved to Saratoga, California, with her mother and niece.
