Olivier Martinez was born in the Paris suburbs, from a working-class household. At an early age, he left school, working numerous pickup jobs such as denim salesman. Friends encouraged him to learn and act, and he enrolled in the Paris International Conservatory at age 23. He reached the international market after several television shows with The Horseman on the Roof (1995), which he billed as "the French Brad Pitt" in his American promotional tour for that film.
