Pauline Collins, OBE, rose to fame during the 1970s when she played Sarah Moffat in BBC's Upstairs, Downstairs (1971) and its spin-off Thomas and Sarah (1979). Since portraying the title character in the play "Shirley Valentine" for which she won nominations from Laurence Olivier, Tony and Drama Desk, she took over the part in her film adaptation Shirley Valentine (1989), receiving a BAFTA and being selected for Academy Award and Golden Globe.Raised to Irish emigrant parents in Devon, England, and educated at a convent school. In the 2001 Queen's Birthday Honours Roll, she was awarded the O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for her drama services.
