He graduated from Ossining High School, where he was class secretary. His early career options included becoming a certified public accountant, and before being an actor, he served as an performance consultant for Connecticut's state budget office. He learned the acting craft with Eva Le Gallienne and Sanford Meisner on deciding to change professions. His most prominent role is that of Columbo detective, but this was not his first effort to act as a detective. He was filling in for such a part during a high school play when the original student actor fell ill.
