Peter Brian Gabriel (born 13 February 1950) is an English musician, songwriter, record producer, and politician who has achieved fame as the original lead musician and frontman of the progressive rock band Genesis. Gabriel began a successful solo career with "Solsbury Hill" as his first single, after leaving Genesis in 1975. His 1986 album, So, remains his best-selling release, certified in the UK as triple platinum and in the US as five times platinum. The most popular song from the soundtrack, "Sledgehammer," won a record nine MTV Awards at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1987 and in 2011 it was announced. For most of his life Gabriel was a world music king. He co-founded the WOMAD festival in 1982. Through his company Real World Records he has continued to concentrate on producing and promoting world music.
