Phoebe Belle Cates was born and raised there on 16 July 1963 in New York City, New York. She is the daughter of the pioneering Broadway director and tv executive Lily and Joseph Cates. Her oncle was Gilbert Cates, director/producer. Phoebe is from Russian Jewish origin, and one-quarter from Chinese. She taught at the school of Miss Hewitt, then at the New York City Technical Children's Academy. When she was ten years old, she took lessons at Juilliard for three and a half years, before she was forced to leave by a knee injury. Phoebe had been a busy model from New York starting at the age of 14.
