Walker was born in Warrington, Cheshire, England on 19 May 1966. At 18 years of age she graduated from Twickenham's Ballet Rambert Academy, started as a dancer but was forced to change course by injury. She began with the Royal Shakespeare Company at the London Drama Center, portraying small pieces before graduating with small TV roles.
