Dana Elaine Owens (born March 18, 1970) is an American rapper, musician, songwriter, actress, and artist, professionally known as Queen Latifah. Raised in Newark, New Jersey, in 1989, she signed with Tommy Boy Records and released her debut album All Hail the Queen on 28 Nov 1989, featuring the hit song "Ladies First." Her second and final album with Tommy Boy R was Design of a Sista (1991). Latifah appeared on the FOX sitcom Living Single as Khadijah James from 1993 until 1998. Her third album, Black Reign (1993), spawned the single "U.N.I.T.Y." that received a Grammy Award and debuted at # 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming a major influence on women.
