Rinko was born in Hadano just south of Tokyo, to Kikuchi Yuriko. The area is best renowned for its green tea and public baths. She's the eldest of three children. She began modeling in her hometown after being scouted on the path, and then continued to perform under her birth name before moving to Rinko.She starred in The Taste Of Tea, a cult film, but came to the attention of mass viewers for her role in Babel, for which she had studied sign language. She had been playing a deaf-mute. In 50 years, after Umeki Miyoshi, she becomes the first Japanese actress to be nominated for the Oscars.
