Robert Carlyle, a bus company founder and painter and decorator Joseph Carlyle, was born in Maryhill, Glasgow, Scotland. When his mother left him when he was four he was raised by his father. He enrolled in acting classes at the Glasgow Arts Centre at the age of 21, after reading Arthur Miller's "The Crucible."
