Veteran actor and producer Robert Selden Duvall was born on 5 January 1931 to Mildred Virginia (Hart), an aspiring dancer, in San Diego, CA, and William Howard Duvall, a naval career officer who later became an admiral. After graduating in 1953, Duvall was majored in drama at Principia College (Elsah, IL), then spent a two year hitch in the army. He started attending the Theater in New York City The Community Playhouse School on the G.I. Bill, in 1955, worked with Dustin Hoffman under Sanford Meisner, with whom Duvall shared an apartment. Both had been next to another battling young actor named Gene Hackman.
