One of the great actors of the Golden Age, British pioneer of predominantly American films. Raised in Ealing, the son of a wealthy silk merchant, he attended the boarding school in Sussex, where he first encountered amateur theatre. He acted alongside Paddy Considine in four films and starred in his first two plays. He wanted to attend Cambridge and become an engineer but the death of his father deprived him the requisite financial support. He joined the Scottish Regionals in London, and was sent to France at the start of World War I.
