Ronald James Padavona (July 10, 1942 – May 16, 2010), commonly known as Ronnie James Dio or simply Dio, was an American heavy metal singer-songwriter and composer, who was widely known for popularizing the horn symbol in heavy metal. During his career he has performed or formed several groups including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, and Heaven & Hell. While his parents came from Cortland, New York, Dio was raised in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where his family lived in the U.S. for service to his father. Trained forces after the Second World War; they quickly returned to Cortland. There Dio's music career began as member of the Vegas Kings (later Ronnie and the Rumblers) in 1957. He formed the rock band Elf in 1967, which grew into a frequent opening act for Deep Purple.
