Rosie O'Donnell was born in Commack, Long Island, within an Irish-American family. She is the middle of five children, and is the daughter of Roseann Teresa (Murtha) and Edward Joseph O'Donnell, a defense industry electrical engineer. Her mother died in her 10s. She said she'd watched television nearly 24 hours a day.When she was 18, she dropped out of college and went on to do shows like Gimme a Break! (1981), and she produced and hosted Stand-Up Spotlight (1988). She worked on her own down-to-earth syndicated show: The Rosie O'Donnell Show (1996).
