Roy Kelton Orbison (April 23, 1936-December 6, 1988) was an American singer, songwriter and musician known for his passionate singing style, complicated song structures and deep, emotional ballads. Several critics characterized his music as operatic, nicknaming him "Rock's Caruso" and "Great O."Although most male rock-and-roll performers projected a defiant masculinity in the 1950s and 1960s, many of the Orbison's songs conveyed vulnerability. He performed quietly, wearing black clothes to match his black dyed hair and dark sunglasses.
