Salvatore (Sal) Mineo Jr. was born to Josephine and Sal Sr. (a casket maker), who have emigrated from Sicily to the United States. His siblings were Sarina, Michael and Victor. Sal was kicked out of parochial school and was a member of a street gang in a tough neighborhood in Bronx by the age of eight.His parents enrolled him in dance school, and he was given a choice of juvenile detention or advanced acting training after being arrested for burglary at the age of ten.He also starred with Maureen Stapleton and Eli Wallach in the theatrical production "The Rose Tattoo" and with Gertrude Lawrence and Yul Brynner as the young prince in "The King and I." When 16 he played a much younger boy with Tony Curtis in Six Bridges to Cross (1955), and later that year he played Plato in James Dean's Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
