Sally Margaret Field was born in 1946 to actress Margaret Field (née Morlan) and salesman Richard Dryden Field in Pasadena, California. Her parents divorced in 1950 and then her mother married Jock Mahoney, a stuntman, and they had a daughter, Princess O'Mahoney. She has a sibling too, Richard Field. In Van Nuys, California, Sally attended Birmingham High School.Her acting career began in 1965, when she landed the part of Frances Elizabeth 'Gidget' Lawrence in Gidget (1965); due to poor reviews, it was canceled after just one season. In The Flying Nun (1967), which ran for three seasons, she went on to star. She also appeared opposite Kirk Douglas in her first film, The Way West (1967), in 1967.
