Sam Shepard was born to Jane Elaine (Schook), a nurse, Samuel Shepard Rogers, a teacher and farmer who was also in the military, at Fort Sheridan, IL, and Samuel Shepard Rogers. As the eldest son of an officer in the U.S. Army (and WWII bomber pilot), Shepard spent his early childhood moving from base to base around the U.S. until he finally settled in Duarte, CA. He began to act and write at high school and worked as a ranch hand in Chino. He graduated from high school in 1961 and then spent a year at Mount San Antonio Junior College studying agriculture, planning to become a vet.However, in 1962, a touring theater company, the Repertory Players of the Bishop's Company, visited the town and joined.
