She was born to Virginia Frances (Spilman) and Edwin Arnold Spacek, Sr., a county sheriff, Mary Elizabeth Spacek, on December 25, 1949, in Quitman, Texas. The family of her father was of both Czech and German descent.Sissy attended high school in Quitman and was a queen coming home. She embarked on an acting career after graduation, and developed interest in the profession through her cousin, actor Rip Torn. Sissy relocated to New York and enrolled in the Actors Studio branch of New York through him.
