Raised on November 1, 1964, Sophie Ballantine Hawkins is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and painter. Born in New York City, she spent a year as a percussionist at the Manhattan Institute of Music, before deciding to seek a music career. For her first two albums, she gained critical and commercial success, delivering a series of solo hits including "God I Wish I Were Your Lover," "Right Beside You", and "As I Lay Me Down".However, a disagreement over her third album, Timbre, with her record label Sony Music forced her to leave, forming her own independent label. This company also released her subsequent albums, Trumpet Swan Productions. Hawkins is a vegan and a proponent of animal rights and environmental issues for several years.
