Sophie Michelle Ellis-Bextor (born 10 April 1979) is an English singer, songwriter and role model. As the lead singer of the progressive rock band Theaudience, she first rose to attention in the late 1990's. Ellis-Bextor went solo after the group disbanded, attaining mainstream recognition in the early 2000s. Her music is a combination of musical sounds from the popular rock, disco, nu-disco and 1980s electronic music. Her first solo release, Speak My Lips, came out in September 2001. The album reached number two in the UK Albums Chart and has been certified by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) as double platinum. The album has had international exposure and has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide. It produced four songs, of which three had reached the top three in the UK.
