Okonedo was born in 1968, inside London. Her parents were Joan Allman and Henry Okonedo (1939-2009). Her father was a British Nigerian, and worked in the government. Her mother was a British Jew who had been trained as a teacher of Pilates. Sophie's maternal grandparents were emigrants from Yiddish speaking to the UK, one from Poland and the other from Russia.
