Susan Hayward was born on 30 June 1917, in Brooklyn, New York, to Edythe Marrener. Her father was a freight contractor, and as a child Susan enjoyed a relatively stable life, but the precocious little redhead had no idea of what life was waiting for her. She attended public school in Brooklyn, where she graduated from a private high school built to offer marketable skills to students.She initially intended to become a manager but she changed her mind. She decided to do some modelling jobs for NYC city photographers. She went to Hollywood by 1937, her beauty in full bloom, when the national hunt was on for someone to play the part of Scarlett O'Hara in Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind (1939).
